This week’s video features two common creepypasta tropes; corrupting sweetly innocent forms of media, and creepy lost episodes! Enjoy.

Chipotle’s Scarecrow Ad: Eerie Advertising

I was thinking of discussing creepypastas again, but it seems I got sidetracked by a mere ad. Oh well, the subject matter is a good fit for RitS, and considering my affinity for animated shorts it was only a matter of time. It’s an ad for Chipotle Mexican Grill involving a depressed scarecrow, an evil corporation with an idealistic facade, and the ethics of raising sustainable, healthy food.

Here’s the original video if you’d like to take a look at it:

Admittedly, I’m late to the party on this one. It was released in early September and I first heard of this short a few days ago. I’m not sure if it means I’m that good at avoiding commercials or if I’m really that far out of the loop. Probably the latter.

Anyway, I have to hand it off to the folks at Chipotle and Moonbot for their creativity and skill in making The Scarecrow. I really enjoyed it as a standalone piece of entertainment – not just as a commercial. The fact that it gets people to start thinking about the harm that corporate business practices and industrial farming can create is a point in the film’s favor as well.

It’s a subject that’s often on my mind even before the film’s creation. My sister’s a biology major that has worked on an organic farm, so we often talk about it. I eat organic as often as I can and I think that Monsanto is as evil as a corporation can get. Also, it wasn’t all that long ago when I visited a former dairy farm that had to reinvent itself into a Halloween corn maze, pumpkin patch, and haunt attraction; I’ve seen what this type of inequality can do to people at the local level. At least the owner of that place didn’t have to give up his land like so many other unfortunate farmers.

While the film’s quality is fantastic and the general message is one I agree with, I also have a healthy dose of skepticism. Chipolte is another corporation that must also carefully maintain its own image. An image that may or may not be accurate, much like the fictional Crow Foods in their ad. While Chipolte has a reputation for promoting healthy food and helping small farmers, they have been criticized for not practicing what they preach. Many of the ingredients in Chipolte’s food isn’t as organic as they’d like you to believe and while they like to provide meat from ethically raised animals, you’ll find that isn’t always the case. At the very least, they get an A for giving and actually talking about this kind of stuff.

Funny Or Die’s parody is a great example of critical thinking:

As a final note which may or may not be reassuring: I’ve never eaten at a Chipotle restaurant and I’m completely indifferent to the company as a whole. I really can’t say if Chipotle is an ethical corporation or not – this ad just makes me want to go to the farmer’s market and eat organic.

Sorry about the lack of posts this week; my computer was on the fritz and I couldn’t work on anything. Luckily it’s fixed now and I’ll make it up to you all soon. In any case, it’s weird video time again! A cool animation to an awesome Radiohead song. Who among you has also read Animal Farm?

As always if you’ve got a video you’d like to share, please send it to me.

Another weird video from a Japanese animator. Not so scary, but definitely odd. I really like the art style to this one. People of Japan, you seem to have a reputation for having the strangest ideas, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Just a city girl, selling fruit in a lonely wooorrld…
She cries and her blue tears flow out everywheerree….
Just a thirsty boy, his search gets real annooooyyyyying
Seems he’ll get a drink from anywheerreee….

Okay, I’m done…

If you think you’ve got a video that’s just as weird, feel free to make a recommendation. I’ll be happy to post!
